Brussels, Belgium
The winning entry for the 2002 NATO headquarters competition. The design is based on a concept of interlocking unification, one that extends from the building out into the landscape. Public access along roads and in car parks has a formality; rows of trees, canopies, and fountains. The remainder of the site is mostly inaccessible and treated as rolling parkland. Within the field of rolling hillocks sustainable drainage wetland cleans runoff from the roof and car parks for use within the building. Small gardens linked with the extracurricular functions of the building further the metaphor of unity and perseverance.
